Faith Family Medical Clinic

Brief History:

In the spring of 1999, Dr. David Gaw and Dr. John Lamb began discussions concerning the feasibility of opening a family practice medical clinic devoted to serving the primary healthcare needs of low-income Nashville residents without health insurance. Their discussions were founded in their individual commitment to serving others with their skills and experience as physicians. After a number of overseas missions to treat people in need of healthcare, they decided that there was also a great need in their own hometown for a medical mission to those in need of timely quality healthcare.

The doctors decided that an existing model that was in place in Memphis, Tennessee, would be the best approach for serving their own community. The Memphis clinic, the Church Health Center founded by Dr. Scott Morris, welcomed Drs. Gaw and Lamb to visit Memphis and learn how to bring a similar facility to reality in Nashville. After visiting Memphis, Dr. Gaw began to seek other Nashville leaders to aid him in building a clinic for Nashville. Dr. Gaw approached Charlie Martin and he agreed to help with the project. Dr. Lamb approached Baptist Hospital's Board and they agreed to provide the rent-free use of a freestanding medical office building. In the fall of 1999, Bill Youree got involved with the project and began to put together a plan for opening and operating the clinic.

By the spring of 2000, the Development Plan was complete and a name had been selected for the clinic. The founding group chose the name Faith Family Medical Clinic. Informal discussions were held with Nashville community leaders and a number of these people agreed to join and assist with the clinic project. Fund raising efforts were begun in June of 2000 and after receiving major grants from The Memorial Foundation, The Frist Foundation, and the HCA Foundation, Faith Family Medical Clinic opened its doors on October 8, 2001.

Statement of Purpose:

The purpose of the Faith Family Medical Clinic is to provide the low-income residents of Nashville that do not have health insurance with affordable, quality primary medical care. The Clinic seeks to bring these Nashville residents a quality of healthcare that is enjoyed by the more affluent members of the Nashville community that have health insurance or can afford to pay the high costs of today's medical care.

Local experts have estimated that as many as 50,000 Nashville residents do not have health insurance and can not afford to pay the high cost of medical care. They are hard working, contributing members of our community, but they do not get timely medical treatment because they do not have insurance. Their medical conditions often go untreated to the point that they end up in a hospital emergency room with a significantly more severe condition. They suffer with compromised personal health, they miss time from work, and the health care system ends up paying for more expensive care than would have been necessary at the onset of the medical problem. Everyone loses under our current system.

The Faith Family Medical Clinic seeks to become the family physician for these Nashville area residents. With an affordable primary care provider available to them, these people will be able to seek out medical care at the onset of their problem. Treatment will begin early on in the condition instead of after more damage has occurred. Clinic patients will also benefit from counseling and education services designed to help them achieve a healthier life style.

Overview of Programs, Services and People Served:

The main service provided by Faith Family Medical Clinic (FFMC) is primary medical care. FFMC is staffed by physicians and nurses trained in family medicine and provides all family members with the diagnosis and treatment of basic medical conditions. FFMC has a basic x-ray unit for general imaging purposes and a clinical laboratory for basic lab testing. FFMC is also able to dispense medications under the provisions of the State of Tennessee's physician dispensing regulations.

FFMC offers health education services in such areas as weight control, smoking cessation, and healthy lifestyle management. Patients with chronic medical conditions such as arthritis and diabetes will receive special education on their specific lifestyle constraints. Patients that require medical expertise beyond the capabilities of FFMC are referred to specialist physicians for on-going medical treatment. FFMC has developed a comprehensive network of area medical providers, including physicians and hospitals that have agreed to accept referrals and provide treatment at little or no cost to the patient.

FFMC is open Mondays from 7:30am-5pm; Tuesdays from 7:30am-7pm; Wednesdays from 7:30am-3:30pm; Thursdays from 7:30am-7pm; and Fridays from 7:30am-3:30pm.

FFMC is designed to serve low-income families that do not have health insurance. The Clinic is operated on a scheduled appointment basis and will not serve as a walk-in facility. Patients will be asked to provide evidence of employment and level of income. All patients will be expected to pay some portion of the cost of their medical treatment. Fees for patients will be based on their income and the size of their family.  Fees range from $10 to $30 and must be paid at the time of the visit by cash, debit or credit card (we do not take checks). Patients that have insurance, qualify for TennCare, or have income above the Clinic's limits will be referred to other providers for their medical care.
